The unrelenting growth of bandwidth demand is causing a number of dilemmas for network operators—one of which is how best to accommodate the need to provision higher rate circuits, both for enterprise private line customers and for their own infrastructure for higher-layer services. Driven by trends such as storage/computing virtualization, data center interconnect, disaster recovery, high-end video contribution/distribution, multimedia collaboration and more, managed optical services of 100 Mb/s and above are expected to double from 2006 levels by 2010 and grow into a potential worldwide opportunity of over $4B per year.

However, the three infrastructure tools that network operators have used to provision these optical services—SONET/SDH, ROADMs or traditional DWDM—are inadequate for those services, particularly if they span beyond a single metro ring. Each tool requires a trade-off between high value, low cost, and operational simplicity that represents a barrier to profitability.

View the seminar on-demand as Ciena's virtual seminar featuring Mitch Auster and Jim Zik discusses how a programmable end-to-end optical delivery solution can help carriers maximize the profitability of optical service offerings.

View the archive and learn about:

  • Service profitability challenges of existing optical services infrastructure
  • Efficiency of granular OTN-based sub-wavelength multiplexing
  • Economic benefits of end-to-end control plane-enabled transparent OTN switching

This virtual seminar addresses these and other key issues. We review the basics of G.709 OTN technology to understand how it became a key building block for converged, next-gen optical transport networks. We also emphasize the practical implications the technology brings and how to achieve competitive differentiation in the market for optical service delivery.

If you’re facing the challenges of trying to offer more valuable optical services while holding the line on CAPEX and OPEX, view the virtual seminar on-demand to find out how programmable end-to-end optical service delivery can change the way you compete.
